TOP 10 Essential Items for Cardmakers

What are the essentials EVERY cardmaker needs?

Now that you've read through the techniques (CLICK HERE TO READ THE TOP TECHNIQUES LIST) you should be ready to assembly your cards/projects.

But wait, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned cardmaker, having the right tools and supplies at your fingertips can make all the difference in your crafting experience. Let's take a look at some essentials I highly recommend.  And guess what, there are always alternatives, which is how I got started, but if you have these - you are well on your way!

1. **Cardstock**: Start with a selection of quality cardstock in various colors. This will be the foundation for your cards.  I am a huge snob for Neenah Solar White 110lb.  Withstanding any mail carrier, dog biter, foot stomper - long lasting. πŸ˜ƒ

2. **Paper Trimmer or Cutter**: A precise paper trimmer or cutter is essential for clean and straight cuts. It ensures your cards are perfectly sized and trimmed to the exact size for what you want it be.  "one size fits all" - not here - the sky is the limit with a trimmer!!

3. **Scissors**: Sharp, fine-tipped scissors are necessary for cutting out detailed shapes and trimming edges.  I get a few aches and pains in my wrists, so the Fiskar comfort grip and easy grips MUST HAVES!!!  Not just for ease of use, but precise cutting!!

4. **Adhesives**: Invest in double-sided tape, liquid glue, and foam tape for securing paper layers and embellishments.  (HUGE fan of scrapbook.com and their double-sided tape - the only strong adhesive tape that I use)

5. **Stamps and Ink Pads**: Build a collection of clear or rubber stamps and a variety of ink pads in different colors.

6. **Embossing Folder and Heat Tool**: Add texture to your cards with an embossing folder and a heat tool for heat embossing.

7. **Die-Cutting Machine and Dies**: If you're into die-cutting, a die-cutting machine and a selection of dies are a must.  There are a number of machines out there so if you would like me to write about several and share my humble feedback, message me. πŸ˜‰

8. **Stencils**: Stencils are great for creating backgrounds and adding patterns to your cards.  VERY INEXPENSIVE and easy to store.  BONUS TIP: πŸ‘ŒLayer several different shapes and images to create a dimensional background!  Rotate by 45 degrees for each shape and the design will blow your mind!

9. **Markers, Colored Pencils, or Watercolors**: Choose your preferred coloring medium for adding color to stamped images.  Always on sale at your local craft store.  BONUS TIP: πŸ‘ŒTry creating a background by taking one of each color and drawing a line down your card.  Also, draw a line by creating dots around the edge for unique borders.

😍Pr-e-tty!

10. **Embellishments**: Stock up on embellishments like sequins, buttons, ribbons, and stickers to add charm to your cards.

By assembling these essentials, you'll have a well-rounded cardmaking kit that sets you up for success in creating beautiful handmade cards.  Don't forget, these items can be purchased at the Dollar Tree, any craft store and even your local hardware store.  Don't just take my word for it, shop around.  And, if you need help - check out my list of essentials HERE.

HAPPY CRAFTING!

TOP 10 Creative Cardmaking Techniques for Beginners

What are the TOP 10 techniques that beginners MUST be doing for their cards to stand out?

Are you a beginner in the world of cardmaking, eager to create stunning handmade cards? You're in the right place!

  • Perfect for beginners
  • Inexpensive
  • Supplies you may already have
  • Easy to store

With over 20+ years in the Cardmaking industry, I'm going to share what helped me improve my skills and have an ever growing "card stash".  The possibilities are endless when you work through these.  Happy to share a few links of what I use for each product.  >>   HERE.

Happy Crafting!

1. **Embossing**: Add texture and dimension. Use embossing folders and a die-cutting machine to create raised designs on your cardstock.

2. **Stamping**: Stamp your way to beautiful card designs. Explore a variety of stamps and ink colors to create intricate patterns and designs.  Did you know they sell these items at your local DOLLAR TREE stores?!  Just having a flower stamp, a leaf, and a few shapes can give you a variety of card designs.

Here is a video I think you'll enjoy seeing where I used leaves - CLICK TO WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

3. **Heat Embossing**: Elevate your card designs with heat embossing. Stamp your image with embossing ink, sprinkle with embossing powder, and heat it with an embossing heat tool.  Result - a glossy, raised effect - ONE OF MY FAVE TECHNIQUES!

BONUS TIP πŸ‘ If you do not have a heat tool, try a blow dryer, but hold a few inches away from your card so the powder doesn't blow all around.  Once it starts to melt, you can bring it closer.

4. **Die Cutting**: Use metal dies to cut out shapes, sentiments, and intricate designs effortlessly. Mix and match dies to create unique card elements.  Note: this requires a die-cutting machine or handheld unit.  There are many to choose from.  If you have a comment or question, be sure to leave a comment below.  I'll be happy to provide more information.

5. **Paper Folding**: Explore the art of paper folding with origami-inspired designs, pop-ups, accordion fold or simply fold in half and then another half...once open, you have a beautiful creative design to cut or simply affix to your card front.  Simple, yet beautiful! There are also many videos that teach Origami or paper flower designs.  Even Tips on PINTEREST.

6. **Quilling**: Craft intricate designs using rolled paper strips. Quilling is perfect for creating delicate floral motifs and decorative accents and you do not need much.  Either a very inexpensive tool, or use a needlecraft needle, thin pointy tool, even a pencil. πŸ˜‰ Just wrap the paper around the end and twirl.

7. **Watercoloring**: Add a splash of color to your cards with watercolor techniques. Create dreamy backgrounds or paint charming illustrations. - MY 2ND FAVE TECHINIQUE - I could do this allll day!  Very relaxing.  See why here: CLICK TO WATCH THE VIDEO.

8. **Masking**: Masking allows you to layer stamped images, giving the illusion of depth. Use masking paper or Post-it notes to cover and protect areas while you stamp.   How to??  See below:

    1. Stamp a flower

    2. Place a post-it note, piece of tape or just simply hold a piece of paper over part of that flower

    3. Now, stamp the leaf onto your card and the post-it or paper

    4. Remove the post-it/paper and reveal your image showing depth or an illusion that the leaf is under the flower

9    . **Ink Blending**: Blend ink colors to create smooth gradients and backgrounds. This technique is excellent for creating colorful skies and ombre effects.

10. **Mixed Media**: Experiment with mixed media by combining various techniques like collage, stenciling, and adding embellishments like buttons or ribbons for a unique touch.  SO MUCH FUN - Another technique I could do all day.  See why in this video: CLICK TO WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

Now that you have a list of techniques to explore, grab your crafting supplies, and let your creativity flow. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the process and have fun!

Top 10 things to make a blog successful!!!

How to make a blog successful?

I've been compiling ideas to ensure I stick to a good routine.

What better way to stick to a routine then writing it down.

I've found it useful, and I hope you do too.
Enjoy!

Maintaining a consistent routine is crucial for a successful and sustainable blog.

Here's a 10-step list to help you establish and stick to good blogging routines:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define your goals and objectives. Knowing what you want to achieve will help you structure your routines effectively.
  2. Create and use a Calendar: Plan your blog content in advance using an editorial calendar. Outline topics, publication dates, and key milestones to stay organized. (I use a journal within GoodNotes)
  3. Designate Writing Time: Consistency is key, so establish a regular writing schedule that aligns with your daily, weekly, monthly schedule.
  4. Research: Allocate time for research, brainstorming, and idea generation. This ensures a steady flow of fresh and relevant content ideas.
  5. Write in Batches: Consider writing multiple blog posts in one sitting during your designated writing time. This can improve efficiency and reduce the pressure of daily writing. (Jot your notes down in your journal so when you sit, you'll have it in front of you)
  6. Edit and Proofread: Schedule time for editing and proofreading your blog posts. Quality is essential, so don't rush through this crucial step.
  7. Optimize for SEO: Incorporate time to optimize your blog posts for search engines (SEO). Research keywords, optimize meta tags, and format content for readability.
  8. Engage with Your Audience: Dedicate time to engage with your blog's audience. Respond to comments, answer emails, and interact on social media platforms. (Readers are important!)
  9. Analyze and Improve: Regularly review your blog's performance. Analyze metrics like traffic, engagement, and conversion rates to identify areas for improvement.
  10. Stay Updated: Stay informed about tools and techniques that will help your blog content grow.

Remember that routines should be flexible to accommodate unforeseen circumstances or changes in priorities.

Don't be too rigid in your routines; allow room for creativity and spontaneity to keep your blog fresh and exciting!

Getting out of a slump: Brain Fog

Overcoming brain fog as a creator can be as simple as 1, 2, 3....Let's see how!

1. Let Go of your Distractions: (Easier said then done right?!)

    • Take short breaks
      • GET UP and get a glass of water, some coffee or tea.
      • Step outside for 5 minutes and get sunlight.  (Check out my blog to find out how SUNLIGHT can help you - CLICK HERE)

2. Task Organization and Prioritization:

    • Tasks
      • Break your creative process into manageable tasks and prioritize them.
    • To-Do Lists
      • Use apps like Evernote (new Blog coming soon on how I use this app), Google Spreadsheets, Keynote, or even a simple pen and paper to jot down your tasks.
πŸ‘BONUSBy organizing your work and setting clear priorities, you can reduce overwhelm
and make it easier to tackle your creative projects step by step.

3. Physical Activity and Healthy Habits:

    • Regular physical activity
      • Short walks or some stretching exercises
      • Maintain a balanced diet
      • Stay hydrated
      • Ensure you're getting enough quality sleep ("This plays a significant role in cognitive function.") -  So my doctor tells me. πŸ˜‰
    • Limit caffeine and try to eat as healthy as possible (We've all had energy crashes I'm sure, which can lead to worsen cases of brain fog.)

Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can help you combat brain fog and maintain your creative flow.

Remember, everyone's experience with brain fog is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find the combination of strategies that work best for you.  You got this!

Crafting Challenges - Are they preventing you from moving forward?

Do you get stuck when it's time to create? Have you ever spent more time thinking about the WHAT and less time CREATING?

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Crafting is a delightful journey of creativity, but it's not without its hurdles.

What are HURDLES?

Hurdles are obstacles or challenges that individuals face in various aspects of their lives. These hurdles can be physical, mental, or emotional. They often require effort and resilience to overcome. They can represent any difficulties or barriers that need to be cleared or achieved to make progress in a particular endeavor.

Hurdles can be particularly challenging because they often test our limits and require us to push beyond our comfort zones.

How can we overcome HURDLES?

Overcoming hurdles not only demands effort and determination but also the willingness to learn and adapt, ultimately leading to personal growth and achievement. Further, we must face the quest for inspiration.

True Story.... When I decided to blog, I knew MY challenges:

1. Time
2. Material
3. Consistency

It took me months to overcome these challenges by letting my daily routine inspire me to write down a few thoughts, and then turn them into something fresh and exciting. It meant fitting those challenges in between skill, my mission, motivation, ... and eventually success. What is success without those things?!

To be fully transparent, sometimes finding fresh ideas for projects can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. However, I just use it as an exploration for new techniques - regardless of the mistakes I make while crafting. Mistakes lead to tips, tips lead to skills...soon enough, we come to realize we've made it over the hurdle and we are on our way to SUCCESS!

IN CONCLUSION:

Embrace the learning process and find joy in each step to move forward. It can help you overcome any challenge and truly ENJOY every MOMENT you get to be creative!

TIPS to use in your Crafting Business

Avoid These Common Traps When Building a Crafting Business...

Crafting is a rewarding and creative hobby, but like any skill, it comes with its own set of challenges, especially when you're just starting out. To help you avoid some common traps, I'm sharing the TRAPS and then some TIPS that might help you!
Grab your beverage and notebook and come along...

Trap 1: Overinvesting in Supplies

One of the most enticing aspects of crafting is the wide variety of supplies and craft stores.  Before you know it, your crafting space is overflowing with supplies you might not even use. (ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS??)

πŸ‘TIP: Start small. Pick a specific project, make a list of things you will need and buy only the supplies    you need for that. It’s starts out hard, but your wallet will thank you over time!

Trap 2: Skipping the Basics

Crafting includes various techniques and styles to explore. Some beginners dive right into complex projects without mastering the fundamentals. This can lead to frustration and disappointment.

πŸ‘TIP: Begin with simple, beginner-friendly projects to build your skills. Learn the basic techniques before tackling more advanced crafts. A strong foundation will make you a better crafter in the long run.

Trap 3: Perfectionism

Striving for perfection in your crafting projects is admirable, but it can also be a trap that stifles your creativity. I struggle with this but after I’ve committed to “my mistake” and given that item to the recipient, they never notice “my mistake”.

πŸ‘TIP: Embrace imperfection. Remember that crafting is about the joy of creating, learning, and improving. Your skills will develop with practice, so be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

BONUS TIP: Antidote to discouragement >> do not set high expectations.  ENJOY your time crafting.  Time = Money!

Trap 4: Neglecting Organization

Crafting can quickly become CrAzY if you don't stay organized. Searching for supplies or losing track of project details can be frustrating and time-consuming.

πŸ‘Tip: Invest in storage solutions like bins, containers, and label makers to keep your materials organized. Create a designated crafting space where you can work comfortably and maintain order.  After all, happy craft room, happy crafter!

BONUS TIP: Color coded folders are a huge help to storing items. Check out one of my  quick YouTube videos on how I've utilized them by clicking here >>>> ORGANIZE BY COLORED FOLDERS

IN CONCLUSION..

Crafting your way to creativity and self-expression is an adventure worth every stitch, snip, and splatter. Remember, in the world of crafting, there are no mistakes—only unique masterpieces waiting to be brought to life. So, pick up those tools, unleash your imagination, and let your creativity flow.  That's a huge reason why I started my BLOG!

Does TALENT equal TIME?

Talent Means Time:

Nurturing Your Skills and Passions

In a world that often seems to be in a rush, we often forget the profound connection between talent and time. Talent isn't just an ability; it's a product of dedication, practice, and, above all, time. I wanted to share what it means to me and the digital designs that inspired me to write this.

The Relationship Between Talent and Time:

Your talent needs to be unlocked if you have many ideas running through your head, with little to results.  (cough…cough… I’m still a work in progress) Whatever your talent (athlete, artist, musician, poet) your innate abilities are like seeds in a flower package waiting to be purchased and planted, nurtured and grown.  Time is the soil in which these seeds grow, and without it, your talent remains dormant.

Key Points:
      PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT:

Time and consistency for many can be a struggle, but patience and dedication are
the key. Ask someone who is thriving in their production - they will tell you it was
a direct result of days, months even years of going at it regularly.

MISTAKES ARE STEPPING STONES:

With time comes experience, and with experience comes the wisdom to learn from mistakes. Don't be discouraged by setbacks; they are valuable lessons on your journey. As my Mom used to say regarding mistakes, “…if you trip, learn from it & allow it to help you GET BACK UP and KEEP GOING.”

PASSION FUELS PERSISTENCE:

Time can be a test of your commitment to your passion. When you love what you do, investing time becomes a joy rather than a chore. It's the driving force that keeps you going, even when faced with challenges.

TALENT EVOLVES:
As you devote time to your craft, you'll witness your talent evolve and grow.

Here are some practical steps to make the most of the relationship between talent and time:

  1. Set Goals: Define clear, achievable goals.  IMPORTANT: Write them down!
  2. Create a Schedule: Allocate dedicated time in your schedule for practice and improvement. Consistency is key to nurturing your talent.
  3. Seek Guidance: Don't hesitate to learn from others. Accept guidance from others to help you progress faster.
  4. Embrace Patience: Growth takes time.  Trust the process and keep going.

With that said, I was asked to design and create wedding dress paddles.  (The paddles that the bridesmaids hold up when the bride is choosing her wedding dress and say’s YES to the DRESS.  J  After the actual items were purchased, I thought about the time involved in a ‘piece of paper and a stick’ – giggle – and then realized, how about DIGITAL DESIGNS for those with limited time to design, but want the best of both options.

I took my time on the digital design platform and it led to a more profound understanding of creative designs.  What a ride, but I was happy with the outcome and looking forward to more on my creative digital journey!

To check out my designs, click here.

Conclusion:

Talent and time are connected, and the most remarkable achievements are often the result of patient, persistent, and passionate investment of time. IMPORTANT: Remember, it's not about comparing your journey to others; it's about your personal growth and fulfillment!

Will these points help?  Only TIME will tell!

Pacefully Yours,

Monique πŸ’œ
